Every 7 years, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals gets a new Chief Judge. The position has substantial power – the Chief Judge appears on every en banc panel and leads committees on rulemaking, funding, and court policy across the entire circuit. In January of this year, Mary Murguia became the circuit’s first Chief Judge of Hispanic descent. We’ll spend an hour talking with her about her life, her approach to judging, and her plans for the court in the years ahead.
