Though professionalism is central to our ethical obligations as attorneys, a pandemic of incivility threatens to degrade the practice of law and to undercut the public’s perception of the justice system. Incivility in its many forms—from bad behavior to “playing hardball” in the name of zealous advocacy—has infected the profession, with deleterious effects on both case outcomes and our collective well-being. A renewed focus on civility within the legal profession is particularly needed in this era of increased polarization. Please join Professionalism in the Practice of Law for a perspective from both the bench and the bar on this important topic, and a discussion about the best path forward.
